Breeding Stock Evaluation - Stallions
A horse's success at the racetrack does not guarantee his success as a stallion at stud. Our Stallion Evaluation determines if a horse has favorable characteristices for breeding. The more similar a sire and dam are, the more likely they are to breed a horse of similar proportions. If, for example, a great race horse is unusually large or in some way physically unique, it is unlikely that he will be a successful stallion because the chances of finding a mare with similar characteristics are slight. By performing a bio-mechanical analysis, we can ascertain the stallion's general combining ability. This measurement reveals whether he will cross well with a large portion of the broodmare population. Stallions who meet this criteria have an extraordinary probability of success. By breeding these stallions to mares with similar positive characteristics, the likelihood of producing stakes winners increases significantly (see MATCH & MATE for more ways to increase your chances of breeding winning horses). Measuring Success Using matings recommended by Cecil Seaman & Co., LLC,
While our reports help us to spotlight stallions whose general combining abilities favor a high probability for success, they also help us to avoid stallions whose inconsistent genetic backgrounds signify that they will have difficulty duplicating themselves at stud. For example, FERDINAND was a top-class race horse, but his GDT Report (click for more examples and information on understanding the GDT Report) clearly spotlights the inconsistent bio-mechanical composition of his pedigree. Each different color on the GDT Report indicates an ancestor characterized by a different body type. We have not been at all surprised by FERDINAND's inability to produce a runner equal to himself.
