After a horse has been evaluated by Cecil Seaman & Co., L.L.C., the results are analyzed and
presented in a concise, easy to understand format. The final analysis consists of an overall grade
summarizing the horse's ability and several recommendations about how to maximize the horse's
performance. The horse's overall ranking, called a "Grade," can range from A+ to C.
Hall of Fame Trainer and Top Breeder, John Nerud comments: "Cecil Seaman can tell if the
physical structure is there to be a racehorse. If the yearlings don't measure up, I don't go to
look at them. I disregard them. I use Cecil as an advance man."
We have over 30 years experience
grading horses. Many of the most respected people in the business use us to calculate conformation
of yearlings. In addition to helping Mr. Nerud select CODEX, CLABBER GIRL, COZZENE and DR. PATCHES,
we have graded the following horses as yearlings for our clients:
- Will Farish
- A.P.INDY, SUMMER SQUALL, CASUAL LOOK, MINESHAFT

- AT TALAQ, ANNOCONNOR
- Hassan Shoaib
- SHAREFFA, GHAZI
- Art Vogel & Leroy Bowman
- NUNAVUT, BLUMIN AFFAIR

A+ to A grades mean that the horse is in the top 6% of the horses in Cecil Seaman & Co.'s
extensive database. These horses have the greatest probability of being successful racehorses
and producers. Of the Champions in our database, 63% are rated A+ and another 25% are rated A.
In other words, a total of 88% of Champions are rated A or A+.
A- to B+ grades mean that the horse ranks in the top 12% of the horses in our database.
These horses have a good probability of being successful racehorses and producers. A total of
94% of the Champions in our database are rated B+ or better. This means that 94% of Champions
come from only 12% of the overall horses population.
B to B- grades mean that the horse has an average or lower ranking than most of the horses
in our database. These horses generally have a low probability of being successful.
C grade means that the horse is below average. These horses have little or no probability
of being money earners.
The three numerical grades represent the horse's type, ratio, and leverage. Unlike the
overall grades, the numerical grades have a wide range that indicates good probability.
- TYPE
- A horse's type refers to the soundness. A lower type score implies better soundness, the more
lifetime starts the horse should be able to make. Good grades for type range from 1- to 4.
Type scores from 5 to 10 indicate unsoundness.
- RATIO
- The ratio of a horse is the leverage times the mass. The ratio helps determine whether a
horse has the size and proportion to move his or her weight efficiently. An outstanding ratio
is between +5 and +9. Ratios run from -4 to +9.
- LEVERAGE
- The leverage grade of the horse is rated from 5- to 10+. The higher the number, the more
powerful the horse. This number is the most important, without any power the horse will not be
able to compete at the higher levels desired. We recommend purchasing a a minimum of a 5 leverage
score.
- PROJECTION ANALYSIS
- In addition to a grade, a Projection Analysis contains other valuable information about the
horse. The horse's exact ranking within the database is listed, allowing a client to know
precisely where the horse falls in the population. The projected number of lifetime starts is
also noted which gives the client an idea of how many races a horse will start. Information that
will help a client maximize a horse's potential is also included in the report. The grade, surface,
and length of race the horse is best suited for, as well as the horse's optimum racing weight
are important to the success of the horse, and are in the final report. For yearlings, the report
includes the estimated heart girth at 24, 30, 36, and 48 months. All of this information is
clearly spelled out in the Evaluation and Projection Report. Not only is the information detailed
in the report, but if any questions arise, Cecil Seaman & Co., LLC is there to answer them.
