Bloodstock Agency / Sales Representation

At the sales, buying the highest priced horse does not necessarily mean getting the best horse. As we know, it takes many factors to come together in the making of a highly productive horse. We analyze the needs of our particular clients. Be it yearlings, two-year olds or breeding stock, the very first thing we look for is the bio-mechanics and overall balance of the horse. Unless previously measured, we take 15 precise measurements of its skeletal anatomy. Through our system of mathematical formulas and custom designed software, we analyze the bio-mechanics of the horse and determine a horse's potential as an athlete or producer.

Blumin Affair, A $20,000 yearling purchase

Blumin Affair, who we purchased as a yearling for $20,000 for our clients Leroy Bowman and Art Vogel, takes his first step en route to the Breeders' Cup, Kentucky Derby, and $867,065!

Through our system's evaluation we have been able to project a number of important things about an individual thoroughbred with an extremely high degree of accuracy. Such as...

  1. Number of lifetime starts.
  2. Optimum weight as a 2, 3, or 4-year old racing horse.
  3. Type of surface on which the horse can run best. E.g Europeans of Americans.
  4. The class of the horse. E.g. if the horse is a GR SW, SW, Allowance, or Claimer.
  5. Which percentage it falls under within the overall population of the thoroughbred. E.g. top .5%, 3%, 6%, 12%, average, or below average.

We also consider various other factors when buying a horse such as weight factor. We do a WEIGHT ANALYSIS of a horse to determine if the horse is overweight. If a horse is overweight as a yearling, is it likely to keep that extra weight? Through our study we have found that extra weight a yearling carries can have a lasting and profound effect on its future racing performance. It's a critical factor when buying a yearling.

We also take into account the soundness and well being of the horse. One aspect that the majority of people ignore when they buy a horse is looking into the soundness of the sire and dam. We take into consideration how many starts the parents had, if there was an early breakdown, if so for what reason? Was the breakdown of a parent horse caused by a valid reason or merely a freak accident? Or does that horse have a family history of breaking down early.

PETIONVILLE Photo

Cecil Seaman & Co., LLC Sales Representation purchased PETIONVILLE for $175,000 as a yearling for client Jeff Nielsen. PETIONVILLE went on to win three graded stakes, two Derbies, $811,905, and has now begun a promising career as a stallion.

A horse can have the ability to run fast and show super athletic abilities but it is important to know if the horse is durable and can sustain long term workouts. Can it be equally effective throughout his or her long racing career.

Through our analysis of the bio-mechanics of the horse, we determine if the horse has a good point of gravity and the proper amount of leverage for its mass. We can also project the number of starts a horse is capable of. We projected SKIP AWAY to make 40 starts and for his career he made 38 starts and retired sound.

Through our 35 years of experience we have been representing some of the very best horse farms in the business (please see our Clients' Success and Track Record pages). As we have learned through our experience buying a horse is a challenging proposition. It takes thorough preparation and knowledgeable people to get the best results. We provide these advantages for our customers. With our expertise and a little bit of luck on your side we try to get the best horse which can ultimately prove its worth.

The fact we are most proud of is our clients' satisfaction. They boast that it's not always what we buy for them but very importantly what we do not buy for them also.
